FRANKLIN, GRANVILLE, WARREN, VANCE COUNTY GOP LEADERS MEET

Posted by CM1 on May 7, 2009 in Local

Anxious to measure the growing local citizen concern with runaway government budgets, irresponsible spending, repression of opinion, overreaching of government into personal and family life and other wider issues, the four newly elected local GOP County Chairmen from Franklin, Granville, Warren and Vance counties met last week to compare notes. “We wanted to understand whether the increasing numbers attending our individual monthly meetings was unique, or a reflection of a general trend in our area, and perhaps beyond,” said Chuck Stires who chaired the meeting.

“We had never met each other before and I think we were all slightly hesitant about setting out what our constituents were saying to us, but I think we were all encouraged to find that without exception, people who live where we live, many of whom could never be described as political activists, are seriously ticked off about ‘business as usual’ in Washington and the NC general Assembly, and that we were all hearing from people who believe that their voice is not being heard. The message I’m getting is that ‘more of the same’ be it from the old style Bush era, or the current Obama administration, is simply not acceptable,” said Brian Reynell, Chairman of Granville County GOP.

“For me,” said Jacque Esslinger, Chairman of Vance County GOP, “the most encouraging thing to see is the growth of attendees at our monthly meetings. Citizens worry about the lack of moral and personal accountability that seems to be taking over our country, and the way that government is intruding into too many parts of our lives. I think, and I think my colleagues agree, that the Bush administration lost its sense of direction in some areas, and I sure as heck don’t like the direction being set by government whether it’s at Federal, State or County level. What we’re being told is coming from local people – we are being asked to provide direction and leadership at the local level.”

Chairman of Warren County GOP, Rory Richardson said, “This was a great meeting; the first of many I hope. It was clear to me that there was much that unites these four counties. For example, we could not understand why the NC General Assembly is so opposed to the expansion of education options through charter schools, vouchers, true vocational schools, and other alternatives. I mean, we’ve tried the politically mandated government structure and the results get worse and not better, and considerably more expensive. No matter how the current political establishment or their statisticians want to work the numbers, the current system is not serving the kids, or their teachers. Other states have figured it out, now its time for NC to fix the problem rather than bow at the feet of special interests,” said Richardson.

“To summarize the meeting,” commented Jeremy Neal, Chairman of Franklin County GOP, “I’d say firstly that it was way overdue, and, secondly, clearly the sentiments expressed at this meeting were in line with what people all over Franklin country are saying. But I have to tell you that the mood reflected in this meeting was remarkably in line with what is coming out of non-political events.” Commenting on whether or not current holders of political office, of either party, in Washington, Raleigh or any County Commissioner’s Chamber believe that they may expect to get re-elected, Neal said, “just because it’s always been that way, then perhaps they didn’t recall their obligation to serve the people. I think we and our constituents are ready to have our elected leaders get back into the game, listen to the people and act on their behalf.”

The Real Culture War Is Over Capitalism

Posted by Tyler T on May 1, 2009 in Local

Tea parties, ‘ethical populism,’ and the moral case against redistribution.

From the Wall Street Journal – April 30th, 2009

There is a major cultural schism developing in America. But it’s not over abortion, same-sex marriage or home schooling, as important as these issues are. The new divide centers on free enterprise — the principle at the core of American culture.
